Spring 2010 Student Philanthropy Board 6, USF St. Petersburg, housed in MMC4420. Research Methods In Mass Communication

  • problem in the Pinellas and Hillsborough community that the NOFO is trying to solve
  • the primary evidence identifying the real critical need in the Pinellas and Hillsborough community
  • how non-profits will be able to solve this problem
  • how non-profits will be able to solve this problem with $5000

1. The Spring 2010 USF St. Petersburg Student Philanthropy Board #6 (USFSP SPB #6) requests proposals that will develop programs benefiting at-risk children under the age of 17. The program(s) must focus on education with the purpose of youth development (such as after-school programs, sports programs, extracurricular activities, counseling programs for at-risk children and teenagers, leadership development, etc.)
At-risk individuals (under the age of 17) are defined as individuals who are at risk of developing a learning, emotional, behavioral, social, physical, health problem in the future, as a consequence of physical factors (i.e., health problems) or social and environmental problems (low-income background, exposure to violence and abuse, etc.).

2.Our decision to focus on programs targeted at children is based on census data and research studies about the well-being of US children. According to recent research, about 73 million children live in the US, and 18 percent came from poverty-stricken homes. Fourteen percent need special health care. Almost a quarter of 12th graders struggle with drug-related problems. We can't help all 73 million children. But we can make a difference to the boys and girls in our community. We can keep them from becoming another statistic. We can help them reach their full potential, and we would like you to be part of this opportunity.

4.The USFSP SPB#6 will provide one awardee funds up to the $5000 maximum as allocated by the Lead Learn Serve Grant to fund an educational program benefiting at-risk children under the age of 17. The grant funds provided by the USFSP SPB #6 cannot be used for any other purpose or project other than that outlined in the response to the Request for Proposals.

  • how non-profits will be able to solve this problem with $5000
1. This request for proposals is open only to 501(c) (3) nonprofit organizations operating in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.
The Spring 2010 USF St. Petersburg Student Philanthropy Board #8 (USFSP SPB #8) requests proposals that will help foster the development of youth in grades sixth, seventh and eighth through an after school mentoring program for children in financial need.

2.Clinical psychologists refer to middle school age students as “tweens.” Defining characteristics of this age group are physical and emotional due to the developmental happenings of puberty. Students of this age group are more prone to engage in power struggles with parents and teachers as part of their internal changes. This is the age where kids make connections that influence their later years, whether detrimental or positive. Psychologists suggest that emotionally grounded guidance, in the form of a mentor, can positively affect students, and aid in their further development to becoming a socially responsible and productive member of society. The USFSP PB #8 believes that these principles should be applied to the youth of the Midtown St. Petersburg community and calls for proposals that focus on enhancing mentoring programs that will target only students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Successful applications will enhance existing mentoring programs that provide increased academic success for at-risk students in the Midtown St. Petersburg community. Program activities location should take place in Midtown St. Petersburg.

3.Our ideal program is one that provides transportation from school to the designated location for the mentoring program. Meals should be a part of the program.

4. The USFSP SPB #8 will provide one awardee funds up to the $5000 maximum as allocated by the Lead Learn Serve Grant to fund a sustainable mentoring program for youth in grades sixth, seventh and eighth, performed in Midtown St. Petersburg. The grant funds provided by the USFSP SPB #8 cannot be used for any other purpose or project other than that outlined in the response to the Notice of Funding Opportunity Request for Proposals.

The Spring 2010 USF St. Petersburg Student Philanthropy Board # 4 (USFSP SPB) requests proposals that will improve an existing educational development program that will increase the level of independence and academic confidence for economically and environmentally at-risk children, ages three to thirteen.
The grant provided by the USFSP SPB is Federal funds and it carries all Federal restrictions. See Appendix I (Prohibited Program Activities)

2.In 1965, United States Office of Economic Opportunity introduced Project Head Start as part of the „War on Poverty‟, which reified the belief in education as the solution to poverty. According to the Head Start website, “Head Start was designed to help break the "cycle of poverty" by providing preschool children of low income families with a comprehensive program to meet

their emotional, social, health, nutritional, and psychological needs.”1 According to Aaron Pallas, a professor of sociology and education at Teacher‟s College, Colombia University, “young people are at-risk, or educationally disadvantaged, if they have been exposed to inadequate or inappropriate educational experiences in the family, school or community.” According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 28.2% of children from ages three to thirteen have personal and family risk factors.2 USFSP SPB #4 believes that if we enhance an existing program that targets this age group and uses the government funded Head Start program as a model, at risk children will have a better foundation for success. Existing programs should encourage, reinforce and foster the skills necessary to learn, develop and succeed in school. Within these programs, supplies such as computers and books should be implemented to provide at risk children with the opportunities their families are unable to provide for them. We request proposals that focus on enhancing positive community modeling for children ages three to thirteen. Successful applications will augment existing academic success programs for at risk children.

Oct 13 Daily Writing

The main difference between revising and editing is...

Revising is finding simple mistakes (i.e typos, grammer, ect)

Editing is more in-depth (i.e. sentence structure, moving paragraphs around, etc)

What I have been doing to my midterm portfolio is revising, i do this by look over the essay and finding any typos I may have with it. Sometimes (if I have to) I will take a complete overlook over the project and fix whatever I need to.

October 4 Daily Writing

The changes I had made to my draft are that I included more stats to back up my ideas. I was comparing the fact oil is bad in our water as to plastic cups. One of my peers stated that he/she saw one was a solid and one was a liquid. Well, both was decay half-life in the hundreds of years. I really like my topic because this is a local issue and a world issue. I still may need to strengthen my counterpoints in my argument statements. This is so I can prove my arguement is correct. I could use help finding all the proper areas of getting my facts toward harbor pollution.
Also, I would like to know how to have interviews cited in my arguement essay.
