Daily Writing 11/22/10 (mirror)

When I volunteer at the RHM, I wanted to help people. When I clean up the house and making sure everything is ready for the next patron saying at the house, I am doing my part of making sure they feel at home. The staff at the house is really nice, and they always give me thank you. So I know I am helping making the community a better place for everyone. I am always willing to help where I can.

NOFO NOV. 10, 2010

I feel that our current draft of our NOFO for November 10, 2010 is coming alone good. We are setting a few ideas on what we thing we could lower the percentage of homeless by doing. These ideas range from houses, to part-time jobs. The main we will face is that fact most homeless face criminal charges. These charges are put them because at night, they have no place to go to the restroom. So they use the streets, which is illegal.

NOFO Draft 1 Review

Daily Writing (to be completed in your blog):
Look at the parts of a complete draft of a problem-solution paper on p. 389 of the McGraw-Hill Guide. Based on these criteria, assess your current NOFO draft. What criteria does it meet? What criteria do you need to work on? What pieces are missing completely?

I believe that our NOFO answer the problem we address. We should expand on what we want to accomplish. We state in the body information we need to show that we do have an issue on our hands. We need to include a plan on how we show divide the money.

  • Sunday, October 31, 2010

Group discussions and explain the following (for each problem your group is still considering)

    1. Homelessness
    2. Ocean pollution
    3. Domestic violence
    4. Children's education

Homelessness- We can lower the rate of homelessness over the next year

Ocean Pollution- Reduce water polluction in the bay area.

Domestic Violence- Shelter for abuse women

Children Education- Increase education in our childrens' schools.

    • problem in the Pinellas and Hillsborough community that the NOFO is trying to solve
    • the primary evidence identifying the real critical need in the Pinellas and Hillsborough community
    • how non-profits will be able to solve this problem
    • how non-profits will be able to solve this problem with $5000

    1. The Spring 2010 USF St. Petersburg Student Philanthropy Board #6 (USFSP SPB #6) requests proposals that will develop programs benefiting at-risk children under the age of 17. The program(s) must focus on education with the purpose of youth development (such as after-school programs, sports programs, extracurricular activities, counseling programs for at-risk children and teenagers, leadership development, etc.)
At-risk individuals (under the age of 17) are defined as individuals who are at risk of developing a learning, emotional, behavioral, social, physical, health problem in the future, as a consequence of physical factors (i.e., health problems) or social and environmental problems (low-income background, exposure to violence and abuse, etc.).

2.Our decision to focus on programs targeted at children is based on census data and research studies about the well-being of US children. According to recent research, about 73 million children live in the US, and 18 percent came from poverty-stricken homes. Fourteen percent need special health care. Almost a quarter of 12th graders struggle with drug-related problems. We can't help all 73 million children. But we can make a difference to the boys and girls in our community. We can keep them from becoming another statistic. We can help them reach their full potential, and we would like you to be part of this opportunity.

We can keep them from becoming another statistic. We can help them reach their full potential, and we would like you to be part of this opportunity.

4.The USFSP SPB#6 will provide one awardee funds up to the $5000 maximum as allocated by the Lead Learn Serve Grant to fund an educational program benefiting at-risk children under the age of 17. The grant funds provided by the USFSP SPB #6 cannot be used for any other purpose or project other than that outlined in the response to the Request for Proposals.

    1. This request for proposals is open only to 501(c) (3) nonprofit organizations operating in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.
The Spring 2010 USF St. Petersburg Student Philanthropy Board #8 (USFSP SPB #8) requests proposals that will help foster the development of youth in grades sixth, seventh and eighth through an after school mentoring program for children in financial need.

2.Clinical psychologists refer to middle school age students as “tweens.” Defining characteristics of this age group are physical and emotional due to the developmental happenings of puberty. Students of this age group are more prone to engage in power struggles with parents and teachers as part of their internal changes. This is the age where kids make connections that influence their later years, whether detrimental or positive. Psychologists suggest that emotionally grounded guidance, in the form of a mentor, can positively affect students, and aid in their further development to becoming a socially responsible and productive member of society. The USFSP PB #8 believes that these principles should be applied to the youth of the Midtown St. Petersburg community and calls for proposals that focus on enhancing mentoring programs that will target only students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Successful applications will enhance existing mentoring programs that provide increased academic success for at-risk students in the Midtown St. Petersburg community. Program activities location should take place in Midtown St. Petersburg.

3.Our ideal program is one that provides transportation from school to the designated location for the mentoring program. Meals should be a part of the program.

    4. The USFSP SPB #8 will provide one awardee funds up to the $5000 maximum as allocated by the Lead Learn Serve Grant to fund a sustainable mentoring program for youth in grades sixth, seventh and eighth, performed in Midtown St. Petersburg. The grant funds provided by the USFSP SPB #8 cannot be used for any other purpose or project other than that outlined in the response to the Notice of Funding Opportunity Request for Proposals.

The Spring 2010 USF St. Petersburg Student Philanthropy Board # 4 (USFSP SPB) requests proposals that will improve an existing educational development program that will increase the level of independence and academic confidence for economically and environmentally at-risk children, ages three to thirteen.
The grant provided by the USFSP SPB is Federal funds and it carries all Federal restrictions. See Appendix I (Prohibited Program Activities)

2.In 1965, United States Office of Economic Opportunity introduced Project Head Start as part of the „War on Poverty‟, which reified the belief in education as the solution to poverty. According to the Head Start website, “Head Start was designed to help break the "cycle of poverty" by providing preschool children of low income families with a comprehensive program to meet
    2
their emotional, social, health, nutritional, and psychological needs.”1 According to Aaron Pallas, a professor of sociology and education at Teacher‟s College, Colombia University, “young people are at-risk, or educationally disadvantaged, if they have been exposed to inadequate or inappropriate educational experiences in the family, school or community.” According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 28.2% of children from ages three to thirteen have personal and family risk factors.2 USFSP SPB #4 believes that if we enhance an existing program that targets this age group and uses the government funded Head Start program as a model, at risk children will have a better foundation for success. Existing programs should encourage, reinforce and foster the skills necessary to learn, develop and succeed in school. Within these programs, supplies such as computers and books should be implemented to provide at risk children with the opportunities their families are unable to provide for them. We request proposals that focus on enhancing positive community modeling for children ages three to thirteen. Successful applications will augment existing academic success programs for at risk children.

    Oct 13 Daily Writing

The main difference between revising and editing is...

Revising is finding simple mistakes (i.e typos, grammer, ect)

Editing is more in-depth (i.e. sentence structure, moving paragraphs around, etc)

What I have been doing to my midterm portfolio is revising, i do this by look over the essay and finding any typos I may have with it. Sometimes (if I have to) I will take a complete overlook over the project and fix whatever I need to.

    October 4 Daily Writing

The changes I had made to my draft are that I included more stats to back up my ideas. I was comparing the fact oil is bad in our water as to plastic cups. One of my peers stated that he/she saw one was a solid and one was a liquid. Well, both was decay half-life in the hundreds of years. I really like my topic because this is a local issue and a world issue. I still may need to strengthen my counterpoints in my argument statements. This is so I can prove my arguement is correct. I could use help finding all the proper areas of getting my facts toward harbor pollution.
Also, I would like to know how to have interviews cited in my arguement essay.

    • What are the three kinds of rhetorical appeals and how do they work?
    • Describe the three approaches to argument defined in chapter 14 in your own words. As you describe them, provide examples. These should be examples that you make up--not ones from the book or from online. Which kinds of arguments have you had experience writing--provide a brief example if you can.
    1. ethos, pathos, and logos.
    Ethos-Credibility
    Pathos-Emotional
    Logos-Logical

    2. In this chapter talks about cause and effect/Rhetorical Appeals.

    Daily Blog Sept. 15

Revising means to go back and fix errors in a paper. Essays can be a good example. Once you write an essay, you can go back and reread it. If you found errors (or can not), give it to someone else. This way you can have another set of eyes looking for more errors. There input is called "Peer Input", you do not have to take their advice, but is highly recommended. They opinion can possibly make your essay even better. This is because they can take your idea even more out of the box. The best kind of "peer input" is positive feedback. Negative Feedback is to "bad" to the reader cause of the put-downs it involves. Positive input could be something like..."I live your idea but maybe it could be better by..."

    Taking Stock PRP

Taking Stock 1--I am aware in this course we will be keeping a portfolio of all of our work. Back in my 12th grade year in high school, my teacher had us keep a portfolio with all of our work. This was not an electronic one, more like a paperback one.

In this English class, i believe since we will be writing a lot of business letters, keeping them together will be a great idea. This is because, we can see the process we gain over the sememter/year. I have not really written a "NOFO", so this should be an experience for me.

    Taking Stock 2--

    Taking Stock 3--
    1. Middle of the day
    2. In my bedroom
    3. I listen to the radio
    4. You need to be universal; meaning you should be able to write anywhere.

    I-search Draft

My issue will be on children healthcare. The reason why I picked this topic is because I have family member that either stayed in a hospital, had an illness and/or transplant situation. In the past few years, the government had made big changes in their spending on health care. There is a constant battle with the new health-care bill passed this year. As a result, the government is having a hard time balancing out cost in this field. I feel that children are at risk the most because of the fact they cannot work. Many families do have private insurance to cover their children, but many don’t. This is because of the high unemployment rate in America. When the unemployed parent(s) can’t get insurance, they can go on government insurance, but for how long? Even if the child stays on all their 18 years, the government controls the plan.

To get a better understand of this, I hope to volunteer in the children field of health so I can see thro there point of view and possibly their families to see what their opinion is.

    One Faith, Many Cultures

About 35 years ago, Tampa Bay had a very small amount of Islam followers. Today there are so many followers that the city of Tampa/St. Pete created places of warship and thriving communities are starting to form. The population is estimated to be 10’s of thousands. Every Friday, about 300 to 400 worshipers attend prayer service. There are so many different backgrounds of ethic people.

    Civic Engagement Fair Review

My view on the Civil Engagement Fair is that there are many agencies and organizations out there that really care about making a difference in the community. Some examples of organizations focus on people (e.g. Bank of America & Big Brothers, Big Sisters) and other may focus on the environment (e.g. keep Pinellas beautiful & Ocean Conservancy.)

Due to early departures, I was not able to receive a lot of feedback from groups.

One of the main issues, I look forward to is, {If given the funding} where would the money be put to use in that organization. Some issues that should be addressed are…

    1) Homelessness

    2) Water Pollution

One of the biggest issues I see in the area is homelessness.

To resolve this issue the best way would write to a local agency that helps with homeless issues and see what the money can go towards to lower the population of homeless people.

    Daily Writing September 1

Writing to explore is a phrase in which I believe means that you write to gain knowledge. Authors use it to explain their opinion/fact to the reader. I can use this method to explain the paper/essay which I am writing on. Writing to explore is different from writing to convince/inform because, you tell the reader to use their brain, instead of just using facts of today. The audience can be anyone you write to, such as children, teens to adults. Four qualities in "writing to explore" could be

    1. Facts

    2. Challenges in the paper

    3. Opinions

    4. Observations

These are just some examples in what I believe writing to explore could be. You have to stir the waters to make your writing good. I use this in my paper by asking questions or possibility adding my opinion where needed.
The rest of the semester I’m going to look for ways to improve my writing.

Social Issues and Expectations of Civic Engagement Fair

    Questions I should bring up:

What can we do about the homeless issue in St. Pete and Florida?

    • I see this issue everyday in St. Petersburg

Water Environment and how we can save it.

    • We live by a marina as well an ocean.

How can we make St. Petersburg/Tampa a better city?

    • I'm going to live here, might as well make the most out of it

I really hope I can learn a lot out of this Fair. I really want to help change the community and the State. This venue will help spark the change we need for the future. We {the students} can help change the area in which we live. Whether it is the environment, clubs, part-time jobs or career, they all have their importance.

I really hope I can find my true calling. I have high hopes for myself.

    Syllabus Response

Some of the course goals for English Composition 1101 are oral/Digital Component and adding to the conversation. It is very important to strengthen your communication with others because; everybody is important inside of a team. I really hope when I am inside of this class, I can be able to strengthen my vocabulary and be able to look for mistakes in my paper more easily. By the end of the year, we {the students} will be able to successfully understand everything from Rhetorical Knowledge (focusing on audience, purpose, context, medium, etc) to Electronic environments (Researching, Drafting, etc). A few questions I have of them are “what the difference between them? “What are the ways you can learn the difference?” and “How can I use them efficiently and effectively?” The main assignments that must be done are Participation Portfolio, Blogs and Blogging Groups, Wiki, Reflections and Self-Assessments, Drafts and Conferences, and Homework. The main assignment that interested me is the blogs and blogging groups. My least favorite one would be Homework. The one I feel the best prepared for is Drafts and Conferences. In order to be fully prepared in all of the assignments, I will have to improve my reading skills. This will make it better for me to find mistakes and be able to successfully improve paper to the best they can be. The policy on late work is stated as you will not be accepting late work. On the attendance policy is after each absence you lose ten points to your grade till the five absences. When the fifth absence hits, you fail the course. When it comes to rough drafts, the teacher will not review drafts of assignments before it has been peer reviewed. The teachers’ office hours are from 11am-1pm. You should come to the office hours because you can get better grades because you stay on top of your work. Since you’re getting more involved, you receive better grades. You don’t need a preparation to go to the office, just bring your questions or concerns. My first visit to the teachers’ office hours will be soon because of a current book issue I am having. The reasonability for my teacher is usually the same for all teachers; sure the students are able to understand the material. Also, make sure they are really for the real world. At the same time is my {the student} reasonability to ask questions and not disturb other from their education. I really hope to learn everything I need to know about college writing. I think I can give a lot to the English class. I can write a lot of short stories and I like to talk/write about debating topics. I really hope the others in my class can give me feedback and via versa on how you can make topics better as well as our papers. To be honest, high school and college is a big difference for me. Paper have to be turned in on time or else your will not get credit for them. You also need to be in class or else you can fail the semester. I think having the ability to be given the opportunity to help change the community around me. I think the abilities I can bring to the class can be I am the good listener and talker. I can push myself by getting my work done on time. I believe my writing process is I like to be able to as details I can try to be. I try to find the problem and give as many solutions. A few questions I have are “What fun activities should I expect?” “What level of writing should I be at?” “What level of reading should I be at?”

    Aug 30, 2010. Daily Writing

The prints I like to read are the headline news. This is because I can learn about local and the big news of today. Also, I like to read are web blogs because you can other people opinion on certain topics. These topics can range from tech of today to the latest issue of America. The reason why text online is different than newspaper text is because of many reasons. The main issue is the Internet you can post whatever you want vs. the newspaper (even with freedom of the press) that still has rules. I can also read it differently by using the shortcut keys to find information faster than reading the entire newspaper article. I can read College textbooks in many different ways. Most textbooks usually come with illustrations to comprehend the article of which I am reading. The easiest way to read these textbooks is to use the index and look for the best page for the problem at hand.
For non-fiction books, the best way to read these pages are probably read the whole page. This is because many books have so many details that it would be bad to leave important facts out.
The best way to remember what you wrote is think aloud what you read. Maybe even write an outline. There are many way you can use to remember what you just read.

    Issues In My City

Homelessness in St. Pete and who can help in the area? (We live in St. Pete)
Is global warming real and who can look into it as a company? (Because I need a future)
What can we do as a community to reduce waste in our landfill? (to help save the planet)
Who can stop animal abuse in Florida? (Because who does not love animals)

I really want how to be a successful leader in the community. I also want to be able to understand and solve issue in this community as well as Florida, etc. Maybe one day I can be in the position to really change the community.

Getting On Course To you Success Ch.1 PRP

This Chapter is important to me because this chapter explains the fundamental of starting success in life. It explains the importance of the book and the important of being successful. The chapter explains that many college students feel that they do not need this course, but in reality they may need all the help they can get. There are three princoples of deep and last learning, they are:

    1. Prior Learning
    2. Quality of Processing
    3. Quantity of Processing

These Principles help me and the reader understand that these are great ways to be a more active successful person. Most human brains are driven off of a "neural network". These networks help us remember or to learn objectives in life. For example, the reason it takes a person a long time to learn a new device is lack of experience but if someone been working with that device is because of prior knowledge.

One of the most important learning system is "The Core Learning System"--"CORE" stands for

    1. Collect
    2.Organize
    3. Rehearse
    4. Evaluate

    Do you like to write?

Do I like to write? I would have to say yes. What do I like to write? Well, Probably short shorties...Mostly Horror Stories. They are my favorite. You can write about pretty much anything. Anything from aliens to zombies taking over the world. I probably really gotten into writing horror stories in my 7th grade year. That was when my (at the time) Assistant Principle was our teacher for a period and wanted us to write a stories in regards to halloween. I wrote about my middle school I was at and about people dieing from a monster in the ouskirts of the school grounds. A few years later, I made the story longer to keep the story fresh for me. I still would like to go back and make it a lot longer, maybe even a novel at one point. Currently I am in College English 1101. I really hope this course will increase my ability to improve this past writing.
